Irvine, Calif. - The Pacific men's volleyball team fell 3-0 to No. 6 UC Irvine in the season finale Saturday at the Bren Events Center (25-21, 25-18, 25-18).
Tommy Carmody led Pacific with 11 kills to go with five blocks and a .588 hitting percentage. Thomas Hodges added seven kills and four blocks, while Christian Franceschi also added seven kills. Edgardo Cartagena chipped in six kills and four blocks. Joshua Stewart (14 assists) and Marco Grasso (15) split setting duties.
Irvine improves to 18-10 overall, 15-9 in MPSF play. The Tigers wrap the season at 3-24 overall and 2-22 in MPSF action.
Franceschi, Cartagena and Carmody opened with kills for a 3-1 early lead in set one, but Zack La Cavera quickly answered for UC Irvine. The two teams traded points as Hodges, Franceschi and Carmody drew the Tigers level at 9-9. Franceschi struck again for a 14-13 lead, but the Anteaters surged ahead on kills from Collin Mehring and Scott Kevorken. Carmody tallied back-to-back to pull within 18-17, but Mehring's block provided a four-point cushion, and Jeremy Dejno closed out the set, 25-21.
A pair of kills and a pair of attack errors staked UC Irvine out to a 4-1 lead in set two. Carmody and Caragena posted a block, and Marty Ross' kill brought the Tigers within 8-4. Irvine spread around the offense, with La Cavera, Dejno, and Mehring providing kills to build a 12-5 lead. Hodges and Carmody added kills and them teamed for a block with Cartagena as the Tigers pulled within 16-11. Despite kills from Cartagena and Hodges, Irvine maintained a five-point edge via a pair of service errors. La Cavera and Kevorken posted kills for the 25-18 win and a 2-0 lead.
In set three, Irvine jumped out to an 8-1 lead and never looked back. Hodges picked up back-to-back kills, but Irvine tallied a Kevorken kill and consecutive blocks for a 14-4 advantage. Cartagena, Franceschi and Carmody tallied to pull within 15-7, and the Tigers narrowed the gap to 18-12 on Hodges and Ross's kills plus a block. But Connor Hughes and Tamir Hershko restored a seven-point lead. Carmody chipped in a solo block but the Tigers would get no closer than six. Hershko's kill set up match point, and after a Carmody kill, Dejno finished the set with match point, 25-18. Irvine hit .423 for the set while holding the Tigers to .214 hitting.
The Anteaters out-hit Pacific .372 to .200 for the match, while Pacific held an 8-7 advantage in blocks. Dejno led Irvine with 12 kills while La Cavera finished with nine and Hughes eight.
