Pleasant Hill, Calif. - In the first game of the day, Pacific's men's water polo team defeated No. 10 Long Beach State 11-9. With the win the Tigers improved to 5-0 on the season while the 49ers fell to 2-2 on the year.
In the first frame Pacific was held scoreless while Long Beach took the 1-0 lead at the 3:11 mark.
At the start of the second quarter freshman Balazs Erdelyi (Eger, Hungary) tied the contest at one all with his first goal of the day at the 7:19 mark. The 49ers then took their second lead of the day at the 5:42 spot however sophomore Goran Tomasevic (Split, Croatia) countered one second later to make it a 2-2 contest. With 5:03 remaining in the half Long Beach regained the one point advantage, but the Tigers responded with back-to-back goals from Tomasevic and junior Daniel Lungu (Netanya, Israel) at the 4:51 and 3:39 points respectively to give Pacific the 4-3. The 49ers then tied the game at four all at the 2:55 mark but sophomore Balazs Szabo (Budapest, Hungary) scored at the 1:57 mark to give Pacific the one point lead. Long Beach closed out the half notching two goals at the 1:26 and :31 spots to take the 6-5 lead.
The Tigers held the 49ers scoreless in the third quarter while Erdelyi and senior Austin Delong (Houston, Texas) scored back-to-back goals at the 7:17 and 3:21 marks to give Pacific the 7-6 lead.
In the final frame Long Beach opened the quarter with a goal at the 4:22 point to tie the game at seven goals apiece. But Tomasevic, Erdelyi and senior Joey Gullikson (Sonoma, Calif.) found the back of the net at the 4:00, 3:31 and 2:07 marks to give the Tigers the three point advantage. With :54 remaining on the clock Long Beach scored its eighth goal of the contest but senior T.J. Friedman (Fairfield, Calif.) countered 22 seconds later to make it an 11-8 game. The 49ers tallied their final goal of the game with :11 remaining on the clock for a 11-9 final score.
Pacific was led by sophomore Goran Tomasevic (Split, Croatia) and Balazs Erdelyi (Eger, Hungary) who notched three goals apiece. Freshman Alex Malkis (Yoqneam, Israel) recorded six saves in the cage for Pacific.
The Tigers continue action on the Diablo Valley JC campus at 2:40 pm against No. 2 UCLA.
