No. 7 Pacific Dominates No. 20 Bucknell, 16-8

Santa Clara, Calif. - The No. 7 ranked Pacific men's water polo team tallied six goals in the first quarter to down No. 20 Bucknell, 16-8. The Tigers, who improved to 11-6 (1-1 MPSF) on the year, were led by sophomore Goran Tomasevic (Split, Croatia) who scored five goals while junior Tom Koning (Poway, Calif.) and Balazs Szabo (Budapest, Hungary) scored three goals apiece.

In the first frame, Bucknell scored the first goal of the contest at the 6:56 point but Pacific responded by making it a 2--1 game when Koning and Tomasevic notched consecutive goals 31 seconds apart at the 6:31 and 6:00 marks respectively. The Bison tied the game at two all with a goal at the 4:32 mark; however Koning tallied his second goal of the quarter to put the Tigers up 3-2. The Tigers then extended their lead to three on a goal from junior Daniel Lungu (Netanya, Israel) at the 3:02 spot and a converted five-meter penalty shot from Balazs Szabo (Budapest, Hungary) at the 2:15 point. With 1:35 remaining in the quarter the Bison made it a 5-3 contest but the Tigers responded on the counter with a goal from Lance Morrison (Fairfield, Calif.) 30 seconds later to end the quarter.

Koning completed the hat trick at the 6:41 spot to begin the second quarter, putting Pacific up 7-3. But Bucknell responded with a goal on 35 seconds later on the counter attack to come within three of the Tigers. With 5:44 remaining in the half Tomasevic scored his second goal of the day to give the Tigers the 8-4 lead but the Bison answered with their fifth goal of the contest 24 seconds later. Pacific ended the first half leading 9-5 on a goal from Szabo with 4:08 remaining on the clock.

Tomasevic kicked of the third quarter with a pair of goals at the 5:16 and 4:01 marks to give Pacific the six point advantage. After being held scoreless since the 5:20 mark in the second quarter, Bucknell found the back of the net at the 2:44 point in the third to make it an 11-6 game. However the Tigers finished off the quarter with goals from Morrison, Szabo and senior Jeff Hoornaert (Stockton, Calif.) at the 2:17, 1:41 and :05 to give Pacific the 14-6 lead heading into the final frame.

In the final quarter the Tigers gained the nine point advantage when junior Todd Hazen (Atherton, Calf.) found the back of the net at the 6:34 spot. The Bison then tallied their two final goals of the game at the 6:11 and 5:04 points to make it a 15-8 contest. However the Tiger offense was not done, as Tomasevic concluded the game with his fifth goal of the contest with 3:33 remaining on the clock for a 16-8 final score.

The Tigers conclude action at The Rodeo at 3:15 pm against No. 20 Brown.
