Malibu, Calif. - No. 5 Pepperdine defeated No. 13 Pacific, 12-6. With the loss Pacific fell to 12-12 (0-5 MPSF) on the year, Pepperdine improved to 9-10 (2-4 MPSF) on the season.
To start the first quarter sophomore Tom Koning (Poway, Calif.) put Pacific on the board early, notching his first goal at the 6:32 mark. Pepperdine responded 35 seconds later, tying the game at one goal apiece. The Waves closed out the quarter scoring two additional goals while limiting the Tigers to one goal.
Entering the second quarter trailing 3-1, the Tiger offense was held scoreless as the Waves tallied five unanswered goals to make it an 8-1 contest at the half.
In the third frame, the Waves tallied their ninth goal of the game with 5:53 remaining on the clock but the Tigers responded 41 seconds later on a goal from senior Joey Rossi (Ceres, Calif.). Trailing 10-2, Rossi notched his second goal of the quarter at the 4:24 mark to cut Pepperdine's lead to seven. The Waves scored back-to-back goals for the nine point advantage, but sophomore Tyler Reardon (Oak Park, Calif.) scored his first goal of the game with 1:14 remaining to cut the lead to eight.
Koning opened the fourth quarter notching his second goal at the 7:35 spot, making it a 12-5 contest. Sophomore Lance Morrison (Fairfield, Calif.) scored Pacific's second goal of the quarter with 0:11 left in regulation to make it a 12-6 contest. The Tiger defense held Pepperdine scoreless in the final quarter but Pacific's offense was unable to find the back of the cage to overcome Pepperdine's lead.
Senior Joey Rossi (Ceres, Calif.) and sophomore Tom Koning (Poway, Calif.) led the Tigers notching two goals apiece. Sophomores Tyler Reardon (Oak Park, Calif.) and Lance Morrison (Fairfield, Calif.) also tallied a goal for Pacific.
Freshman Tomislav Bujas (Split, Croatia) recorded four saves in the cage for the Tigers, while senior David Andrus (Houston, Texas) finished the day with three.
Pacific continues action Sunday, Nov. 8, against No. 9 UC Santa Barbara at 12 p.m.
