Pacific's Five Goals in Fourth Quarter Not Enough, Defeated By Pepperdine 12-9

Los Angeles, Calif.In the second day of the MPSF Tournament, No. 5 Pepperdine defeated No. 12 Pacific, 12-9.

The Tigers took the pool at McDonald's Swim Stadium early Saturday morning to face off against the Waves. Pepperdine took an early 1-0 lead with 5:21  on the clock, but freshman Goran Tomasevic (Split, Croatia) tied up the game 26 seconds later at one goal apiece. The Waves regained the one point advantage at the 4:35 mark to make it a 2-1 contest. Tomasevic and Lance Morrison (Fairfield, Calif.) notched back-to-back goals with 4:09 and 3:18 left on the clock respectively to give Pacific the 3-2 lead. Pepperdine tallied a goal to tie the game at 3-3 with 1:45 left in the quarter.

In the second frame, Pepperdine again opened the quarter notching a goal for the one point advantage. But junior Austin Delong (Houston, Texas) scored his lone goal of the contest to tie the game at 4-4. The Waves scored three consecutive goals to enter the half with the 7-4 lead.

In the third quarter Pepperdine held the Tigers offense scoreless. The Waves scored three goals in the quarter to extend their lead to six.

Pepperdine notched back-to-back goals for the 12-4 lead to start the fourth, but the Tigers defense stepped up to hold the Waves scoreless the rest of the quarter. Junior Joey Gullikson (Sonoma, Calif.) scored four consecutive goals including one on a penalty shot to put Pacific within four. Freshman Jason Wensley (Concord, Calif.) scored his first goal of the tournament to make it a 12-9 contest, but the Tigers were unable to find the back of the net to overcome Pepperdine's three point lead before the end of regulation.

Junior Joey Gullikson (Sonoma, Calif.) led the Tigers notching four goals in the loss. Despite battling food poisoning senior David Andrus (Houston, Texas) recorded seven saves in the cage for Pacific.

With the loss the Tigers fall to 13-17 on the year and the Waves improve to 13-11 on the season. Pacific will face No. 9 UC Santa Barbara at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 29.
