Los Angeles, Calif. - In the opening round of the 2009 MPSF Tournament, No. 1 USC defeated No. 12 Pacific, 13-5.
USC took an early 2-0 lead in the first quarter, scoring goals at the 7:15 and 6:04 marks. Freshman Goran Tomasevic (Split, Croatia) put Pacific on the board, notching his first goal at the 5:32 spot to cut the Trojan lead to one. USC regained the two point advantage at the 3:39 spot, but Tomasevic tallied his second goal 18 seconds later on a penalty shot to make it a 3-2 contest. The Trojans went on to score back-to-back goals at the 1:37 and 1:01 spots before Tomasevic recorded his third goal of the quarter with 0:42 left to play. USC found the back of the net with 0:08 left on the clock to close the quarter with the 6-3 lead.
In the second frame, the Tiger defense stepped limiting the Trojans to two goals. Pacific trailed 8-3 entering the half as the Tiger offense was shutout in the second quarter.
The Trojans opened the third quarter tallying back-to-back goals to take the 10-3 lead. Tomasevic and junior Joey Gullikson (Sonoma, Calif.) responded notching back-to-back goals at the 3:37 and 1:25 marks respectively to cut the Trojan lead in half. With 0:55 left on the clock USC notched a goal for the six point advantage.
USC closed out the game tallying two goals in the fourth quarter while holding the Tiger offense scoreless.
Senior David Andrus (Houston, Texas) recorded 13 saves in the cage for the Tigers while freshman Goran Tomasevic (Split, Croatia) led Pacific with four goals.
With the loss Pacific falls to 13-16 on the season and USC improves to 23-1 on the year. The Tigers continue action Saturday, Nov. 28, at 9:30 a.m. against No. 5 Pepperdine.
