No. 13 Pacific falls to No. 4 California in Opening Round of the SoCal Tournament

Irvine, Calif. - In the opening round of the Southern California Invitational No. 13 Pacific lost to No. 4 California, 14-6. With the loss the Tigers dropped to 10-7 on the season and the Golden Bears improved to on the 10-3 on the year.

In the first frame, the Tigers held the Golden Bears scoreless until the 5:52 mark when California notched the first goal of the contest. Sophomore Tom Koning (Poway, Calif.) tied the game at one goal apiece with left 5:07 left on the clock. California closed out the quarter scoring three unanswered goals to make it a 4-1 game at the end of the first.

California opened the second quarter scoring its fifth goal of the game at the 4:05 mark. Koning tallied his second goal of the contest at the 3:39 spot to score Pacific's lone goal of the quarter. The Golden Bears closed out the half with a goal at the 2:47 mark to take the 6-2 lead.

In the third quarter California notched its seventh goal at the 7:14 point, but freshman Balazs Szabo (Budapest, Hungary) responded notching his first goal of the contest at the 5:49 mark. California led Pacific 8-3 when freshman Goran Tomasevic (Spilt, Croatia) scored a goal with 2:53 remaining cut the lead to four. California regained the five point advantage with 0:49 remaining to end the third quarter.

California scored five goals in the fourth quarter and held the Tigers scoreless until the 1:37 spot when junior Austin Delong (Houston, Texas) tallied his first goal of the game. Junior Hector Lam Jr. (San Diego, Calif.) notched his first goal of the day with 0:51 remaining in regulation to make the final score 14-6.

With the two goals, sophomore Tom Koning (Poway, Calif.) has scored 38 goals this season. Senior David Andrus (Houston, Texas) had 6 saves in the cage for the Tigers, bringing his season total to 65 saves on the year.

The Tigers continue action at 4 p.m. against No. 11 UC San Diego.
