No. 17 Pacific Cruises To 9-6 Victory Over Sonoma State
Stockton, Calif. – In the first of two games on the day, Pacific’s women’s water polo team defeated Sonoma State, 9-6. With the win the Tigers improved to 19-11 (2-3 Big West) on the year while Sonoma State (SSU) fell to 8-26 (3-9 WWPA) on the season.
The SeaWolves scored the first goal of the contest at the 6:29 mark at the start of the first frame, but senior Bethany Quertermous countered at the 4:18 spot to tie the game at one all. SSU regained the one point advantage with :56 remaining on the clock before senior Meara McCarthy countered with 8 seconds left in regulation to make it a 2-2 contest.
At the start of the second frame SSU scored its third goal of the game at the 5:53 spot. The Tigers then countered with four consecutive goals from Mandy King, Malena Prlain, Quertermous and Elise Martin to put Pacific up 6-3 heading into the half.
In the third frame Pacific’s scoring momentum continued as the Tigers took the 9-4 lead while limiting the SeaWolves to one goal in the quarter. Finding the back of the net at the start of the quarter were Allison King and Martin who tallied goals at the 7:18 and 6:03 spots. Kyleigh Shea scored for the SeaWolves at the 3:07 spot but Prlain countered with a skip shot to the far post on the breakaway with 13 seconds remaining on the clock.
In the final eight minutes of regulation SSU tallied goals at the 6:16 and 1:09 points for a 9-6 final score.
Pacific was led by senior Bethany Quertermous, and freshmen Elise Martin and Malena Prlain who scored two goals apiece. Also scoring goals for the Tigers were Meara McCarthy, Mandy King and Allison King, who found the back of the net once. Freshman Michele Relton recorded nine saves in the cage for Pacific. Senior Kailiee Bucknum played the final four minutes of regulation in the cage for the Tigers.
The Tigers return to action at 4 pm against Cal State Monterey Bay.
