Pacific Defeats Cal State Monterey Bay in Final Game of NorCal Tournament, 15-6

Berkeley, Calif. - In its final game of the NorCal Tournament the Pacific women's water polo team defeated Cal State Monterey Bay 15-6. With the win the Tigers improve to 2-3 on the year while Otters fall to 1-5 on the season.
The Tigers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first quarter with back-to-back goals from freshman Jasmine Myles (Auckland, New Zealand) and junior Catherine Collett (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) at the 7:23 and 5:57 marks. With the game tied at 2-2 after consecutive goals by the Otters, Pacific regained its two point advantage on goals by junior Bethany Quertermous (Humble, Texas) and sophomore Allison Kosich (Stockton, Calif.). With 43 seconds left in the quarter the Otters tallied a goal to make it a 4-3 contest.
In the second quarter the Tiger defense shut out the Otters with freshman Brooke Millar (Auckland, New Zealand) recording five saves in the cage. Offensively Sioban Larsen (Mundelein, Ill.), Dara Tawarahara (Honolulu, Hawaii), Quertermous, Mandy King (Benicia, Calif.) and Meara McCarth (Simsbury, Conn.) each scored one goal apiece to put Pacific up 9-3 entering the half.
At the start of the third quarter Cal State Monterey Bay cut Pacific's lead to five notching a goal with 7:31 left on the clock. Tawarahara scored her second goal of the contest at the 4:24 to put the Tigers up by six. With two minutes left in the quarter the Otters scored a goal to make it a 10-5 game.
With 7:11 left in regulation in the final frame Tawarahara completed the hat trick to extend Pacific's lead to six. Quertermous scored her third goal of the contest at the 6:01 spot to put the Tigers up 12-5. Sophomore Brittany Lloyd (Orinda, Calif.) and junior Courthey Boettger (Stockton, Calif.) tallied back-to-back goals putting Pacific up by nine. The Otters found the back of the net one last time with 2:29 on the clock to make it a 19-6 game. Junior Melissa Loper (Napa, Calif.) scored a goal with 12 seconds left in regulation to seal the victory for the Tigers.
Offensively 11 Tigers found the back of the net with juniors Dara Tawarahara (Honolulu, Hawaii) and Bethany Quertermous (Humble, Texas) leading the way scoring three goals apiece. Freshman Brooke Millar (Auckland, New Zealand) recorded seven saves in the goal while junior Kailee Bucknum (Mission Viejo, Calif.) picked up one save in the cage.
Pacific returns to action Feb. 13-14 at the Road Runner Invite in Bakersfield, Calif.
