STOCKTON, Calif. – Ioana Popescu clinched the final win of the match, helping the University of the Pacific women's tennis team to its third victory of the season defeating the University of Texas Arlington, 4-3.
After falling in the doubles' competition, Pacific picked up its first win with Dohee Lee earning her third consecutive win defeating her opponent, Momoka Horiguchi, in straight sets 6-3 and 6-0 to tie the match 1-1. No. 3 singles, Anna Ramos Vinolas defeated her opponent, Anna Wichert, in straight sets by a 6-3 and 7-6 decision to take the go-ahead point in the match and lead 2-1.
The next four singles' matches went into three sets with Maayan Sela claiming the first set in her singles' match, 6-2, before falling in sets two and three by scores of 6-0 and 6-2.
No. 5 singles Anneroos Nederstigt claimed her first set, 6-4, before falling in a tight match in sets two and three by scores of 6-4 and 7-5.
Yumi Asami was forced to play a third set after taking set one, 6-4, but falling in set two, 6-2. Asami picked up the third point for the Tigers defeating her opponent, Carla Cerdan Vivies, 6-4.
Popescu clinched the match in a drawn out three set singles competition defeating Almudena Boza in sets two and three by scores of 6-4 and 7-5.
"Great team win today," said head coach Mike Erwin. "After dropping doubles, we got out to fast start in the singles, winning five of six first sets. No. 2 and No. 3 won in straight sets and No. 6 won in three sets and No. 4 clinched the match in three sets. It was awesome to see our players fighting and giving themselves a chance. I am especially proud of Ioana Popescu who fought through cramps to clinch the match."
The Orange and Black improve to 3-6 on the season heading into conference action.
The Tigers host the University of San Francisco and Santa Clara on Friday, March 23 and Saturday, March 24 to open West Coast Conference action. First serve is set for noon both days.
