Day One Concludes For Women’s Tennis

PALO ALTO, Calif. - The Pacific women's tennis team traveled back to Palo Alto Thursday to compete in the ITA Northwest Regionals hosted by Stanford University. The Tigers faced opponents from six different schools in hopes to bring home a championship.

Doubles started the day with the pair of Karina Vyrlan and Maayan Sela taking down a duo from Seattle, 8-2. Anneroos Nederstigt and Sabrina Rodriguez paired up to face a combo from San Francisco, but fell, 8-2, while Yuki Asami and Anna Ramos Vinolas dropped their first doubles match to another San Francisco pair, 8-6.

In singles, action Ramos Vinolas won her first singles match of the tournament in a three-set thriller, 7-5, 2-6, 7-6(6), but dropped her round of 64 matchup, 6-2, 6-4 to move her into the consolation round.

Sela was also victorious in her round of 128 contest over Santa Clara's Elvena Gevargiz in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. In her second match, Sela faced off against the seven-seed from Stanford Emily Arbuthnott and couldn't remain in the main draw as she fell 6-1, 6-3.

Nederstigt was successful in her first match against Kelli Woodman of Seattle in a quick match, 6-2, 6-3, which brought her into the round of 64 where she battled UC Davis Aggie Lani Rae Green. The Tiger was edged by the Aggie in three sets, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.

Continuing in singles was Vyrlan who also won her first match, 6-4, 6-4 but dropped her second match, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 to Domonique Garley of Gonzaga.

Rodriguez fought tough against Celine Gruaz of Cal Poly but was nipped in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, while Asami also fell short going up against San Francisco's Anna Sokiran for the second time after falling to the West Coast Conference rival in doubles, 6-2, 6-3

The Tigers move on to day two of the tournament, while will begin in the morning with doubles.
