STOCKTON, Calif. - The Pacific women's tennis team edged out visiting San Francisco Academy of Art University 4-3 on Friday afternoon, handing the Urban Knights their first loss of the season. The win brings the Tigers to 3-3 on the year while the loss drops the Urban Knights to 7-1.
"Today was a tough fought match by both teams. We let some opportunities slip away in doubles again which we have to figure out how to change going forward," said head coach Tina Samara. "I was really impressed with some of our singles play today. Sabrina and Yuki went out and took care of business. Cris did a good job of regrouping after losing her second set. And Maayan won on sheer will. Sometimes that's the difference between winning and losing and I was happy to see her come away with the win for the match."
In doubles Maayan Sela/Cristina Saenz de Buruaga Ruiz cruised to a 6-2 win at the one spot. Yuki Asami/Sabrina Rodriguez dropped their match at three 7-6 (3). At the two spot, Anneroos Nederstigt/Christiana Ferrari lost a nail bitter 6-4 as the Urban Knights grabbed the doubts point.
In singles Asami took her match at the five spot 6-3, 7-5 to give Pacific its first point of the day. Saenz de Buruaga Ruiz topped her opponent at the three spot 6-2, 2-6, 6-0, and at the four spot, Rodriguez won in straight sets 6-2, 6-3. Ferrari dropped her match at the six spot 6-2, 6-1 and Nederstigt also fell in her match 6-3, 6-1. This left it up to Sela at the one who took her three set match 7-6 (6), 4-6, 7-6 (4) to secure the victory.
The Tigers will continue the homestand this Sunday when they take on the University of Nevada-Reno at noon.
