Women's Tennis Edged By UC Davis, 4-3

Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific women's tennis team was edged by UC Davis, 4-3, in the spring season opener at Hal Nelson Tennis Courts.

Freshmen Viktoriya Dzyuba and Maayan Sela posted straight-set singles wins, while the Tigers earned the doubles point.

Katie Dyson and Cristina Saenz de Buruaga Ruiz teamed for a 6-2 doubles victory over Kamila Kecki and Frederique Sleiffer, while Yuki Asami and Anneroos Nederstigt dispatched Tiffany Pham and Isabella Von Ebbe, 6-1. Dzyuba and Sela were leading 4-3 against Kristy Jorgensen and Alex Huie when their teammates wins wrapped up, as their match went unfinished.

In singles, Dzyuba topped Jorgensen at the first position, 6-0, 6-2, while Sela defeated Huie, 6-1, 7-5, as the Tigers won the No. 4 matchup. But at No. 6, Kecki defeated Rodriguez 6-1, 6-3 and then No. 3 Jessie Lee posted a third-set win over Dyson, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3, to narrow the Tigers lead to 3-2.

Lani-Rae Green rallied back to beat Saenz de Buruaga Ruiz, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, in No. 2 singles as the match hung on the third set between Asami and Sleiffer in the No. 5 match-up.
Sleiffer prevailed, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, as the Aggies clinched the match.

Pacific falls to 0-1 on the season, while UC Davis opens at 1-0.

"The season kicked off in an exciting fashion," head coach Charlotte Scatliffe said. "While it's unfortunate to be on the losing side of this match by just a few points we got something this team greatly needs: experience. There are so many learning opportunities from today and I truly think that this loss will bring the team together even more and make them hungrier. Five out of six matches were the first collegiate matches for five freshmen. This is a great group of girls and I know they will continue to work hard, come together even more and keep improving. We'll get back to work before Las Vegas, a trip we are certainly excited for."

The Tigers will face Weber State (Friday), New Mexico State (Saturday) and UNLV (Sunday) in Las Vegas, with all three matches starting at 10 a.m.
