Moraga, Calif. - Viktoriya Dzyuba and Cristina Saenz de Buruaga Ruiz won the Saint Mary's Fall Invitational Doubles B Final as the Pacific women's tennis team went undefeated Sunday at Moraga.
The duo controlled the final match against Ana Loaiza and Jennifer Ong of Sacramento State in an 8-3 victory in Flight B.
Yuki Asami and Anneroos Nederstigt teamed for an 8-2 win over Portland's Sarah Hellstern and Marina Reimers, 8-2, in consolation doubles B.
In singles, Asami posted a win over Hellstern, 6-2, 6-3, and Nederstigt turned in an 8-3 win over Emily McColl of Sacramento State.
"We finished the Saint Mary's Fall Invitational on a high note with Cristina and Viktoriya winning the whole flight and Anneroos and Yuki also winning both their matches today," head coach Charlotte Scatliffe said. "Cristina and Viktoriya played a very strong doubles match and deserved to win the tournament with their play all weekend. I'm very pleased, both with going undefeated today, and more importantly our level of play, our fight and our spirit. If we continue to make improvements in those areas through the rest of the fall season, we will be ready for our dual matches come January."
Pacific's tandem of Viktoriya Dzyuba and Cristina Saenz de Buruaga Ruiz advanced to the doubles final of the SMC Fall Invitational Saturday in Moraga.
The duo out-lasted Chelby Cook and Janet Liu of Santa Clara, 8-7 (6) in the semifinals to advance to Sunday's Flight B final.
Dzyuba and Saenz de Buruaga Ruiz also each posted singles victories, as Dzyuba defeated Lyann Hoang of California, 6-3, 6-2 in the Singles A Round of 16. Dzyuba was upended in the quarterfinals in three sets by the second seed, Melissa Lord of Stanford, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
In Singles B, Saenz de Buruaga Ruiz also posted a Round of 16 victory, defeating UC Davis' Kelsie Bryant, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5. In the Singles B quarters, she fell to Radina Dimitrova, 4-6; 6-2; 6-2.
In Singles C Consolation play, Anneroos Nederstigt lost in the semifinals, 8-1, to Justine Deleval.
In Doubles C Consolation, Nederstigt and Yuki Asami fell to Samantha Martino and Isabella Von Ebbe, 8-2.
The Pacific women's tennis team recorded five victories on day one of the SMC Fall Invitational at Saint Mary's. Viktoriya Dzyuba and Cristina Saenz de Buruaga Ruiz both went undefeated on the day in singles and doubles.
In Flight A singles, freshman Viktoriya Dzyuba downed Gaelle Rey of San Jose State, 6-2, 6-3.
Junior Cristina Saenz de Buruaga Ruiz rallied after dropping the first set for a 1-6, 7-6 (2), 6-4 victory over Anna Veleva of Eastern Michigan in Flight B.
Freshman Yuki Asami fell to Parminder Kaur of Saint Mary's, 6-2, 6-2 in Flight B and freshman Anneroos Nederstigt dropped a match to Saskia Angerer of Sacramento State 6-2, 6-1 in Flight C.
In doubles, the Tigers tandem of Dzyuba and Saenz de Buruaga Ruiz opened the day with a 8-2 win over Critser and Vanessa Nommensen of Saint Mary's, and then swept Lani Rae Green and Jessie Lee of UC Davis, 8-0 to advance to the semifinals.
Dzyuba and Saenz de Buruaga Ruiz will face Chelby Cook and Janet Liu at 8:30 a.m. Saturday in the Flight B semis.
Asami and Nederstigt fell to Emily McCool and Andie Mouzes of Sacramento State, 8-3, but rallied to beat Celine Gruaz (Cal Poly) and Emma Wilson (Fresno State), 8-4.
"It was a great day for the Tigers," head coach Charlotte Scatliffe said. "Not only in the win column, but also because of the fight and spirit we showed, which are two of the most important things we are working on with this young team. If we can continue to play and fight the way we did today, we will get what we need out of the fall and be ready for the dual season."
In Saturday's singles action, Dzyuba will move on to face Lyann Hoang for California and Saenz de Buruaga Ruiz will meet Kelsie Bryant in the Round of 16, both matches will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday.
