Tennis Wraps Battle In The Bay Sunday

San Francisco - Pacific tennis wrapped their fall weekend at the Battle In The Bay Classic Sunday as Alex Giannini picked up a pair of singles wins and Cristina Saenz de Buruaga Ruiz fell in the consolation final.

Giannini posted a pair of victories in consolation play, taking out Brett Bacharach of UC Davis in a tie-breaker; 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (5); and then defeating Adam Levie of UC Davis in straight sets; 7-5, 6-4.

In the women's consolation final, Saenz de Buruaga Ruiz fell to Dzina Milovanovic of Pepperdine, 7-5, 6-3.

"Cristina played a great match today and has a lot to be proud of after this weekend," head coach Charlotte Scatliff said. "She played very high level tennis and showed great improvements in areas we've been working on. This is just the start of fall season and Cristina will have many other opportunities to keep up her improvement."

The women's team will head to the Cal Nike Invitational October 2-4 in Berkeley. The men's team will split its squad between the ITA All-America Championship in Tulsa, Oklahoma, October 2-11, and the Aggie Invitational at UC Davis (Oct. 2-4).

Saturday's Recap

Cristina Saenz de Buruaga Ruiz advanced to the consolation final of the Battle In The Bay Classic Saturday, while Alex Giannini stayed alive in the men's consolation side at California Tennis Club.


Saenz de Buruaga Ruizmoved on with a with a 6-1, 6-2, over Gen McCloskey of San Francisco Saturday. She will face Dzina Milovanovic of Pepperdine on Sunday at 10 a.m.

"Cristina played some very solid and composed tennis today as she maintained her focus and stuck to her goals," head coach Charlotte Scatliffe said. "We had great support out there cheering her on and we are really looking forward to tomorrow's match."

On the men's side, UC Davis' James Wade topped Giannini, 6-4, 6-1, in the consolation round of 32, but Giannani will play one more match on Sunday (opponent to be determined).

Friday's Recap

On the women's side, Pacific's Cristina Saenz de Buruaga Ruiz gave top seed Madison Westby of USC a run in the round of 16, falling 7-6 (7), 6-2.  In the consolation round of eight, Saenz de Buruaga Ruiz defeated Thyra Taune of San Francisco, 6-4, 6-2, to advance to the semifinals on Saturday at 2:30 p.m., where she will face Gen McCloskey of USF.

"Cristina has put in a tremendous amount of work and energy this fall," head coach Charlotte Scatliffe said. "I'm so happy that it came to fruition today, as she played one of the best matches I've seen from her. We look forward to a great semifinal match tomorrow."

Jordan Angus and Filip Vittek of San Diego topped Daniel Alameh and Alex Giannini in doubles, 6-4.

Giannini fell to Angus in singles, 6-3; 6-2, while Alameh fell to Stanford's Anthony Tsodikov, 6-3, 6-2.

In the consolation round, Giannini will face James Wade of UC Davis, Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in the round of 16
