Stockton, Calif. - As the match got underway, the Tigers calibrated their level of play to match the intensity of the competitions. The doubles matches were packed with intense forehands and line-drives, cross-court shots and coupling these ranging shots with short slice drop shots that would catch anyone off guard. The Tigers in the No. 2 spot, junior Julia Hansen and senior Summer Irvin, quickly secured the win and began to cheer on their teammates. As match play continued more overheads and topspin were utilized. The Tigers at the No. 3 position came up short of the win with a final score of 8-3. As the both teams surrounded the No. 1 court to support their respective teammates, the match was 7-6 in favor of the Tigers. As the Lobos tied up the score at 7 a piece, the Tigers tried to pick up two more games, but the score became tied again at 8 all. During the tie break, the Tigers came up short of the win with a final score of 8-6 after battling it out with wicked shots and many heated rallies.
As the singles events developed, the Tigers in the No. 2 and 3 positions secured their matches in straight sets. Junior Julia Hansen overcame a great deal of adversity and rose to the occasion to dominate against her opponent after starting the first set at a disadvantage. Hansen went on to win the match with a final score of 6-4 , 6-1. Senior Summer Irvin at the No. 3 position proved victorious despite her injury early on in the first set when the score was a mere 3-0 lead for the Tiger. After a medical timeout to treat her twisted ankle, Summer did her best and fought through the pain to defeat her opponent Kristin Eggleston in straight sets with a final score of 6-3, 6-4. Though the other Tigers came up shy of victory, the scores themselves are not a direct reflection of the caliber of play. The Tigers are gaining immense amounts of experience and are gaining momentum as well as confidence.
At the conclusion of the match, Coach Chiene stated, "This was a match we were capable of winning even without our No. 3 player Susan Te still out with sickness and injury. We were within a point of winning at No. 1 doubles but did not convert to secure the doubles point. I am proud my girls for how well they are competing with all the adversity they are going through. Summer Irvin fought off a twisted ankle during the match to win. Very gutsy performance from her. My freshman are gaining valuable experience from these matches."
