Grand Canyon Tops Beach Volleyball

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Pacific beach volleyball team fell to Grand Canyon Monday at Raney Courts, 5-0.

At No. 2, Jordyn Sanchez & Hannah Towne jumped out to a 5-1 lead early on Katrin Gotterba & Maycie LaBass and finished set one, 21-13. LaBass served up a 5-1 lead in set two, but the Antelopes fought back to pull within 13-12. However, the Tigers surged back with an ace from LaBass and a kill to the back from Gotterba providing a 17-13 lead. Gotterba added an ace and the Tigers won a long rally for set point, and LaBass hammered home the set winner, 21-15. In set three, the Tigers opened with a 3-0 lead, but three-straight points from GCU started an Antelope run as they led 6-4. Gotterba's ace pulled Paciifc within 9-8 and LaBass tied it at 9-9. Gotterba hit the back line and added an ace for an 11-9 Pacific lead. But the Antelopes answered to tie at 12-12. Gotterba floated an attack over the front line for a kill and LaBass hit the sideline for a 14-12 lead. GCU picked up back-to-back points to tie at 14-14. Tied at 15-15, the Antelopes posted back-to-back kills for a three-set win, 21-13, 15-21, 17-15.

Lexi Elman & Andie Shelton rallied from an early hole to tie set one at 10-10 against Molly Turner & Tjasa Kotnik at No. 1. But Grand Canyon picked up the next four points forcing the Tigers to play catch-up. Pacific would get as close as 18-15 on a block from Shelton as GCU took set one, 21-16. In set two, Grand Canyon pulled away, 21-13.

Janie Feldsher & Taylor Poncetta trailed Jessica Stansfield & Rebecca Conrad at No. 3, 18-14 in set one, but reeled off three straight to climb within one. But the Antelopes tallied back-to-back points and after Poncetta drilled a shot to the back corner, GCU finished it off, 21-18. In set two, the Antelopes pulled away for a 21-13 win.

Emily Baptista & Alex Holt fell behind at No. 4, 10-3 in set one to Jessica Clark & Kelli Iverson, but reeled off six straight points to pull within one and tied it at 11-11. However, Grand Canyon pulled away again for the 21-16 set one win. In set two, The Antelopes led 15-11 and picked up the next four points to seize control in a 21-12.

At No. 5, Tyanna Roy & Emily Reinking posted a 21-5, 21-15 win over Ashlyn Fleming & Skylar Wine.

In the extra match, Leigh Stonerook & Anna Unnasch posted a set one win over Olivia Petnicki & Fleming, 21-15, and jumped out to a 4-0 lead in set two and never looked back in a 21-15, 21-13 win.  

The Antelopes improve to 11-3 overall, while Pacific falls to 3-7.

Pacific will face Saint Mary's on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
