Padilla's Second Goal Is The Game-Winner In Double Overtime As Pacific Upends Saint Mary's

Stockton, Calif. - Junior Maricela Padilla scored two goals, including the game-winning goal with one minute left in double overtime as the Pacific women's soccer team won 3-2 at Saint Mary's College on Thursday, September 20. With the win the Tigers improved to 2-6 on the season, while Saint Mary's dropped to 5-4-1.

"It was great to pick up our first road win of the season," said Tiger head coach Keith Coleman. "With one more match leading into Big West play, it's important to head into league action on a high note."

After a red card issued the Gaels' Casidee Lynch, the Tigers played a player up the rest of the game. Saint Mary's went up 1-0 on a goal by Christina Tognetti at the 26:31 mark. The Tigers struck for the first time on goal by junior Maricela Padilla off a beautiful over the defender pass from sophomore Mirella Mattos with 35:22 elapsed. Freshman Cheyenne Somers scored at the 40:49 mark, when her pass across the box deflected into the goal off a Saint Mary's defender. The Tigers outshot the Gaels 8-5 in the first half.

The teams played even for most of the second half, but the Gaels were able to even the score at 2-2 on a header from Vicki Shimkus at the 66:49 mark of the second half. The Tigers outshot Saint Mary's 14-8 in the second half, but could not find the back of the net as the match headed for overtime.

The first 10 minute overtime was dominated by the Tigers, with a 3-0 shot advantage. Neither team scored, sending it to a second sudden victory period. The teams looked headed for a tie, when sophomore Sasha Moscatello passed to Padilla on the right side of the box. Padilla turned her defender inside and shot with her left foot, finding the left corner of the net.

Pacific dominated shots, outshooting the Gaels 27-15, though just an 8-7 edge in corner kicks.

The Tigers are next in action with a home match against Arizona on Sunday, September 23 at 12:00 p.m.
