One of the Tigers' top breaststrokers, Alves took 17th in the 100 Breast (56.77) and 23rd in the 200 Breast (2:08.01) at the 2013 MPSF Championships. At the Pacific Invitational, he clocked in at 1:00.73 in the 100 Breast and 2:15.41 in the 200 Breast, good for sixth and eighth, respectively. The UNLV Winter Invite saw Alves take fifth in the 100 Breast (58.92) and third in the 200 Breast (2:08.57).
Specializing in the sprint freestyle and breaststroke events, Alves had a solid junior campaign for the Tigers. He took fourth in the 100 Breast versus conference foe Air Force before collecting a fifth-place finish at the Pacific Invite and a sixth-place finish against Seattle U and CSU Bakersfield. He also placed fourth in the 50 Free, coming in fourth against Fresno Pacific and UC Santa Cruz. At the 2012 MPSF Championships, Alves finished 20th in the 100 Breast behind a time of 57.82. His preliminary mark of 57.51 was good for third-best on the team.
In the Tri Meet on Jan. 22, Alves took third in the 100 Breast with a time of 1:00.71. He finished fourth in the same event versus Cal Poly on Jan. 28, this time touching the wall at 1:00.79.
At the 2010 Big West Championships, Alves finished 17th in the 100 Breast (58.33) and 18th in the 200 Breast (2:11.99). In his first collegiate meet against California on Oct. 10, he took third in the 100 Breast and second in the 200 Breast with times of 1:00.81 and 2:17.87, respectively. He did the same thing in the Tri Meet on Nov. 21, this time clocking in at 1:01.68 in the 100 Breast and 2:15.53 in the 200 Breast.
Alves graduated from Bettendorf High School in Bettendorf, Iowa, where he earned four letters in swimming. He earned All-Mississippi Athletic Conference and All-State honors each year. Alves was also an All-America selection as a sophomore, junior, and senior.
Alves was born in Los Angeles, Calif., and is the son of Ilidio and Valerie Alves. He has two younger sisters, Rebecca and Elizabeth. Alves is majoring in international relations.
