Dec. 10, 2010
Stockton, Calif. – Senior Joey Gullikson (Sonoma, Calif.) of the Pacific’s men’s water polo team has been named Pacific's November Competitor of the Month. The Competitor of the Month award is given each month to a Pacific athlete who demonstrates unusual or remarkable competitive effort.
"I have coached Joey for five years and he has been a competitor everyday during those five years,” said head coach James Graham. “He is extremely deserving of this award."
During the month of November Gullikson tallied 14 goals in eight games for Pacific for a 1.75 goals per game average. Starting at defender against No. 3 Stanford he paced Pacific with a career high five goals, helping the Tigers defeat the Cardinal for the fist time since the 2006 season and just the fifth time in program history. For his accomplishment against the Cardinal, Joey was named NCAA.com’s Player of the week on November 16 and helped Pacific earn its first No. 4 national ranking in the Collegiate Water Polo Association’s top-20 poll since the poll began in 1995.
He then closed out his career as the Pacific’s leading scorer during the 2010 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament when he recorded six goals in three contests. In his final season with the Tigers, Gullikson appeared in 27 games while recording 27 goals, 20 steals, 30 assists, 24 earned ejections and 9 field blocks.
