Dec. 1, 2010
Woodland, Calif. - Freshman Balazs Erdelyi (Eger, Hungary) of Pacific's men's water polo team has been named Mountain Pacific Sports Federations's (MPSF) Newcomer of the Year on Tuesday, November 30.
Erdelyi finished his freshman campaign tallying 51 goals, 48 steals, 60 assists and 19 field blocks for Pacific. In addition to finishing the season as Pacific's second leading scorer, Erdelyi was the only freshman among the MPSF's top-10 individual scorers during the 2010 season. He concluded his first season in the orange and black with a 1.82 goals per game average.
This season Pacific's men's water polo team saw three Tigers earn All-MPSF accolades. In addition to being named the Newcomer of the Year, Erdelyi was a second-team all conference selection. Also earning All-MPSF honors were Goran Tomasevic (Split, Croatia) and Alex Malkis (Yoqneam, Israel) who earned first-team all-conference and honorable mention all-conference distinctions respectively.
Tomasevic was named to the All-MPSF First-Team after tallying 53 goals in 28 games for the Tigers and finished the 2010 season as Pacific's leading scorer. This year he recorded a season high five goals in Pacific's season opener against Loyola Marymount University at the Triton Invitational in San Diego, Calif. Tomasevic was named the MPSF Player of the Week on September 7, after recording 10 goals, one assist, one steal and eight exclusions drawn in Pacific's first four games at the Triton Invitational. Additionally he scored two or more goals in 15 of Pacific's 28 games. Last season Tomasevic was named the MPSF Newcomer of the Year in addition to earning All-MPSF honorable mention honors.
Malkis, an All-MPSF Honorable Mention selection, ended his season with 28 saves at the 2010 MPSF tournament to bring his season saves total to 221 in 26 appearances for a 8.50 saves per game average. Thru November 29, Malkis led all MPSF goalkeepers with the highest saves per game average and total number of saves during the season. In his inaugural campaign in the orange and black, Malkis recorded an MPSF season high 18 saves against UC Irvine on October 31. Malkis was voted the MPSF Player of the Week on November 8 when he tallied 26 saves, three steals and one assist in two games for the Tigers. Malkis had 11 saves against UC Santa Barbara and five saves against Santa Clara, while opponents went a combined 2-for-18 on man up opportunities against Malkis in the two games.
Erdelyi is the third Tiger to earn the distinction. This is the first time Pacific's men's water polo has had players named Newcomer of the year since joining the MPSF. Tomasevic and Duje Kaurloto earned the distinction in 2009 and 2006 respectively.
"I am extremely proud of Goran, Balazs and Alex. They are all well deserving of these honors," said head coach James Graham. "The best part is that they put the team first and in return the team helped them show case their talents. I look forward to the future with all three of them back for the 2011 season."
