No. 4 Pacific Falls To No. 7 UC Santa Barbara, 8-5

Stanford, Calif. – After tying the game at four all heading into the second half, Pacific’s men’s water polo team fell to UC Santa Barbara (UCSB) 8-5. With the loss the Tigers fell to 16-11 (4-4 MPSF) on the season, while the Gauchos improved to 12-11 on the year.
In the first frame, UCSB’s Lazar Komadinic notched the first goal of the contest at the 6:10 mark to put the Gauchos up 1-0. Nearly four minutes passed before senior Joey Gillikson (Sonoma, Calif.) put Pacific on the board with a goal at the 2:12 spot, tying the game at one all to end the quarter.
Less than 15 seconds into the second quarter, the Gauchos regained the one point lead on a power play goal from Komadinic. Pacific continued to battle with the UCSB for the next five minute when senior Austin Delong (Houston, Texas) came away with a field block on Pacific’s end of the pool to give the Tigers possession of the ball. After taking the ball down to the Gaucho’s end, sophomore Goran Tomasevic (Split, Croatia) tied the game at 2-2 on a pass from Tyler Reardon (Oak Park, Calif.) at the 2:30 spot.
With the game tied at 2-2 at the start of the third quarter, UCSB tallied back-to-back goals from Milos Golic and Brian Shoemaker at the 6:33 and 6:07 marks respectively to extend the Gaucho lead by two. Balazs Szabo (Budapest, Hungary) then responded with a pair of goals at the 4:00 and 1:30 spots to tie the game at 4-4 to end the quarter.
In the final frame the Gauchos took a three point lead with goals at the 5:47, 3:22 and 1:03 spots to make it a 7-4 game. With :48 remaining in regulation Tom Koning (Poway, Calif.) tallied Pacific’s fifth goal of the contest, but UCSB responded with a goal on the counter attack 27 seconds later for an 8-5 final score.
Pacific was led by sophomore Balazs Szabo (Budapest, Hungary) who tallied a pair of goals for the Tigers. Also scoring goals for Pacific were Joey Gullikson (Sonoma, Calif.), Tom Koning (Poway, Calif.) and Goran Tomasevic (Split, Croatia). Freshman Alex Malkis (Yoqneam, Israel) recorded 10 saves in the cage for Pacific.
The Tigers concluded action at the MPSF tournament on Sunday, November 28 at 10 a.m. against the No. 8 seed Pepperdine Waves.
