Tigers Defeat No. 11 UC Davis, 5-3

Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific men's water polo team defeated No. 11 UC Davis on Saturday, September 20, at Chris Kjeldsen Pool. The win moved the Tigers to 7-5 on the year, while UC Davis fell to 2-6 on the season.
In an outstanding defensive contest, the Tigers scored three first quarter goals to take the early advantage. Junior Grant Hollis (Redlands, Calif.) scored just a minute into the game, then made it 2-0 with a goal at the 3:13 mark. Senior Shane Mahoney (Lodi, Calif.) added the Tigers' third goal of the period with 1:46 remaining to give Pacific a three goal lead. The teams played even in the second period, each scoring one goal. The Aggies cut Pacific's lead to 3-1 on a goal by Adam Bennett with 4:15 remaining in the half. The Tigers took the lead to 4-1 on a goal by senior William Milcovich (Walnut Creek, Calif.) of the game with 2:05 left in the first 16 minutes.
The third period was nearly identical to the second, with each team scoring one goal. The Aggies struck first, cutting Pacific's lead to 4-2 on a goal by Danny Driscoll with 2:48 left in the third period. The Tigers countered with another goal from Mahoney with just one second left in the quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Aggies scored with 5:58 remaining on Driscoll's second goal to cut Pacific's lead to 5-3. The final 5:58 of the game was scoreless, with both teams playing outstanding field defense.
Senior Brian Domecus (Vallejo, Calif.) had 10 saves for the Tigers, while Erik Quinn had 11 saves for the Aggies.
The Tigers return to Chris Kjeldsen pool on Sunday, September 21 as they face UC San Diego at 10:40 a.m. in the third round of the 2008 NorCal Tournament.
