Stockton, Calif. - Senior Alex Malkis was named MPSF men's water polo Player of the Week for the second-straight week, the conference announced Monday. The goalkeeper on the No. 3 Pacific squad is the first MPSF player to win the award in back-to-back weeks since the 2006 season.
Malkis registered 15 saves to lead Pacific to a 7-6 win at No. 4 Cal on Saturday. The senior from Israel held the Bears scoreless for the final 14:37 of the match, allowing the Tigers' offense to overcome a 6-4 deficit and rally for the victory.
Seven of Malkis' 15 saves came in his shutout fourth quarter as he held a Bears squad which entered the match averaging 14.7 goals per game from seeing the back of the net the rest of the way.
The Tigers improved to 10-1 overall and 2-0 in MPSF play. Pacific's two MPSF wins are over No. 4 Cal and then No. 3 Stanford, the first time Pacific has downed both Cal and Stanford in the same season since 1993.
Against MPSF opponents, Malkis has held four teams averaging almost 15 goals per game to just an average of eight goals over four games (plus six minutes of overtime).
The last MPSF player to earn player of the week honors in back-to-back weeks was Collin Mello of UC Irvine, on Nov. 6 & 13 of 2006.
The Tigers will head to Irvine for the SoCal Tournament this weekend. The tourney's third seed, Pacific will face No. 15 Santa Clara in the first round at 10:50 am, and then either No. 6 UC Santa Barbara or No. 11 Concordia at either 4:50 pm or 6:15 pm. Saturday's action will take place at Corona del Mar High School.
