Tigers Advance to 6th Place Game With 10-7 Victory Over UC Irvine

Stockton, Calif. -

 

In Game 17 of the NorCal Tournament Pacific's men's water polo team defeated UC Irvine, 10-7. In the contest the Tigers were paced by Balazs Erdelyi, Tom Koning and Goran Tomasevic who tallied three goals apiece. The Anteaters were led by Mitch Wise who notched four goals. Alex Malkis tallied 16 saves in the cage for the Tigers, while Alex Kazmier registered 8 blocks in two quarters for the Anteaters. Jimmy Friedrich had four saves in the cage for UCI in the second half.

 

Pacific wasted little time getting its offensive attack started, when Balazs Erdelyi put the Tigers up 1-0 at the 7:22 spot. UC Irvine's Trent Baxter tied the game at one goal apiece at the 4:11 mark, but Tom Koning found the back of the net on the counter attack to put the Tigers up 2-1.

 

Erdelyi and Koning notched consecutive goals at the start of the second frame to give the Pacific the three point advantage. With a man-up possession at the 3:53 spot UCI's Mitch Wise tallied his first goal of the day to make it a 4-2 game. With 3:41 remaining on the clock Koning completed the hat trick to put Pacific up 5-2. Goran Tomasevic then closed out the quarter converting a five-meter to make it a 6-2 contest at the half.

 

Down by a four of goals at the start of the third, the Anteaters tallied uninterrupted goals at the 5:20 and 2:42 spots to come within two of the Tigers. Pacific then regained the three point lead when Jason Wensley found Lance Morrison center goal with 12 seconds. However UCI make it a two point game with one second left on the clock on a lob shot goal from Mitch Wise.

 

In the final frame, Pacific went up 8-5 at the 7:43 spot on Erdelyi's third goal of the day. The Tigers then gained the four point advantage when Tomasevic drawn an ejection and converted the five-meter penalty with 2:41 left in regulation. The Anteaters came within two of the Tigers with a pair of goals at the 2:13 and 1:03 spots. But Tomasevic secured the win for the Tigers with a cross-goal bar-in shot with 17 seconds left on the clock.

 

With 10-7 win, the Tigers improved to 4-1 on the season and advances to the 5th place game at 2:40 p.m.
