Tigers Swept By The Warriors

The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team had a season-high 18 blocks (Pacific had 11 team blocks) as they defeated the Pacific Tigers in straight-sets, 25-16, 25-23, 25-23, Saturday night in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Junior Florian Gornik, (Schwechat, Austria) led the Tigers with a team-high 16 kills.

Pacific fell behind in the first frame 13-9 following a five-point Warrior swing fueled by three straight Tiger hitting errors. The Warriors closed out the set by scoring six of the final seven points taking the frame 25-16.

The Tigers got off to a 4-2 lead in set number two. The Warriors then scored five straight and held the lead until Gornik's ace gave the Tigers a 21-20 lead. Hawaii then called a timeout. Out of the break the Warriors rallied in the final moments of the set, scoring the final three points and claiming the set 25-23.

The Tigers took control of set three holding a 12-10 lead before back-to-back blocks by Hawaii's Nejc Zemljak gave the Warriors a 14-13 lead. A kill by Pacific's redshirt freshman Adam Troy (Loomis, Calif.) and two UH errors Moments later kept the Tigers in the contest down 24-23. A final kill from UH's Jonas Umlauft was the final nail nail in the coffin as the Warriors took the frame 25-23 and ultimately the second match in two days fromt the Tigers.

With the result the Warriors improved to (10-9, 8-6 MPSF) while the Tigers fell to (7-14, 3-12 MPSF).

Pacific is back in action with their next six games at home in the Alex G Spanos Center starting with a visit from NYU Friday March 18 in a match scheduled for 7:00pm.
