SPOKANE, Wash. – The University of the Pacific men's tennis team held off the Gonzaga University Bulldogs to claim the 4-3 victory on Friday afternoon.
The Tigers improve to 6-15 overall and 3-4 in the West Coast Conference, while the Bulldogs fall to 9-9 on the season and 2-6 in WCC.
In the doubles competition, Gonzaga's Ruadhan O'Sullivan and Sam Feit retired Akram El Sallaly and John Horoz Garner 6-4 on court 1 but Tadiwa Chinamo and Bernardo Oliveira defeated Kyle Everly and Vincent Rettke 6-4 on court 2.
The Bulldogs got out to a quick start in singles, claiming the first two points on courts 2 and 6 to take a 2-1 lead in the match. However, El Sallaly and Watson picked up two more points for the Tigers to take a 3-2 advantage in the match. El Sallaly defeated his opponent Hunter Egger in two straight sets, 7-6 and 7-5. Watson retired O'Sullivan in two straight with a 7-6 and 7-5 decisions.
Gonzaga tied the match back up at 3-3 with a victory on court 5 before Oliveira clinched the match in a grueling three sets in a tie breaker. Oliveira took set one 6-4 before falling in set two, 4-6. He came back in set three to win 7-6, claiming the final point in a 7-3 tie break.
The Orange and Black heads to Portland on Sunday, April 15 for their final road match before returning home to host the University of San Diego in the final match of the regular season. First serve is set for 11:00 a.m. on Sunday.
