Illness And The Aggies Knock Pacific Out Of The Big West Championships

Indian Wells, Calif. - Facing health obstacles and a tough No. 4 seed in UC Davis, the No. 5 seed Pacific men's tennis team could not overcome their difficulties as they fell in the first round of the Big West Championships on Friday, April 27.  The loss ended the Tigers season as they fell to 8-15 to complete their 2012 season.  The Aggies advance to the semifinals of the tournament on Saturday where they will face the No. 1 seed Cal Poly.

Battling illness early in the day and cramping late, the Tigers struggled to get going in their first match of the conference tournament as Pacific dropped the opening point of the day in doubles action to the Aggies. After dropping the first doubles match at No. 3, the Tigers battled back with an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles to even the opening contest at one match a piece.  While the first two pairings split between the two teams, the Aggies came out on top in doubles action as UC Davis claimed No. 2 doubles behind an 8-3 victory.

Down 1-0 to start the day, the Tigers headed into singles action looking to battle back from the early hole.  Again splitting the first two singles matches to finish, the Tigers dropped the No. 4 singles as Chris Aria defeated Valentim Goncalves Jr., 6-1, 7-6 (7) to put the Aggies up two points.  Looking to battle back, Jainendra Grewal put Pacific on the board with its first point of the afternoon as the freshman won at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 7-6 (3).

Despite the effort out of of the Tigers, the comeback was not to be as the Aggies claimed the No. 3 singles spot in a three-set comeback before taking the final match by default as senior Ivan Castro could not continue due to severe cramps.  Playing in his final collegiate match, the senior, Castro, found himself locked in a battle at the top of the order with Toki Sherbakov, winning the first set 7-6 (1) before dropping the second set 6-4.  After splitting the first two games of the third and deciding set, Castro could not continue as Sherbakov was awarded the match and with it, the Aggies picked up the fourth and final point they would need to advance to the semifinals.
