Tigers Win 75-70 at the University of Victoria

The Pacific men's basketball team won for the second straight night with a 75-70 victory at the University of Victoria on Sunday, Aug. 31. It is the second of three games on the Tigers' 2008 Canadian Tour.
The Tigers opened the game with an 8-2 run, including two three-pointers by junior Royal Edwards (Sacramento, Calif.). The Vikes battled back to out-score the Tigers 14-9 the rest of the first period to cut Pacific's lead to 17-16. In the second quarter, the Tigers bounced ahead to take a 31-26 lead before the Vikes stormed back again. Victoria scored the final six points of the second quarter to take a 34-33 halftime lead.
The Vikes continued the run into the third period, taking a six-point lead, 43-37 with 5:22 left in the quarter. The Tigers responded quickly, using an 11-0 run spurred by four points each from senior Anthony Brown (Sacramento, Calif.) and sophomore Terrell Smith (Federal Way, Wash.) to take a 48-43 lead. The Tigers held a five-point lead (53-48) at the end of the third quarter.
In the final 10 minutes, Pacific had to hold off another run from the Vikes. A three-pointer by Julian Spear Chief-Morris capped a 9-2 run to tie the game at 55-55 with 7:01 left. The Tigers quickly responded with a 9-2 run of their own over the next three minutes to take a 64-57 lead, and the lead would not fall below three the rest of the way. Senior Bryan LeDuc (Corona, Calif.) scored five of his team-best 16 points in that run to help the Tigers to the victory.
Freshman Brandon Hawkins (Phoenix, Ariz.) was the only other Tiger in double-figures, scoring 10 points. Brown scored nine points, including eight in the second half.
The Tigers out-rebounded Victoria 35-30, led by senior Chad Troyer's (Seattle, Wash.) five. Pacific also held a 10-5 edge in steals, including a team-high three swipes by junior Lavar Neufville (Fairfield, Calif.).
The Tigers will finish the tour with another game against the University of Victoria on Monday morning at 11:00 a.m.
