STOCKTON, Calif. - Former Pacific men's basketball sharpshooter Alec Kobre won a gold medal for the United States men's basketball team in the 20th annual Maccabiah Games held in Israel from July 4-18, 2017. The United States went 6-0, which included a 75-67 championship victory over France.
Kobre averaged 9.8 points per game in the tournament with his best effort of 17 points coming against Belgium. Kobre's coach was none other than NCAA analyst and FOX sportscaster, Doug Gottleib.
Gottlieb commended Kobre by saying, "We opened the game featuring Alec's shooting because as soon as he hit his first couple of three's, we got the defense switching. Once the switching began, lanes to the basket immediately opened."
Athletes from 85 countries competed and that accounted for over 10,000 competitors in these games. The Maccabiah Games are open to Jewish athletes from around the world, and to all Israeli citizens.
