Stockton, Calif. – The Pacific men's basketball team cruised to a 77-55 home win over Cal Poly at the Alex G. Spanos Center on Saturday, Jan. 12. With its third straight win, Pacific improved to 9-7 on the season and 3-1 in Big West play. Cal Poly dropped to 7-8 overall, 3-2 in league action.
"We did a lot of great things tonight," said Pacific Head Coach Bob Thomason. "The team has been playing at a high level of late. We just want to keep on doing that but also find ways to get better."
The Tigers hit their first five shots from the field, opening the game with a 12-2 lead just three minutes into the game. Cal Poly cut it back to 15-10, but junior Tony Gill gave Pacific a spark off the bench by scoring five points in a 7-0 run that extended it back to 22-10 with 11:13 to play in the half. The Tigers pushed it out to a 28-13 lead with 9:13 to play after a layup from Markus Duran. With Pacific holding a 32-20 lead at the 5:17 mark, Cal Poly out-scored the Tigers 7-2 to make it 34-27 with 1:33 to play. Senior Travis Fulton answered with a three-pointer to make it 37-27 at the break.
Junior Khalil Kelley scored the first two baskets of the second half for Pacific, pushing the lead to 41-27 with 18:00 to play in the game. Kelley's two baskets were part of a huge edge in the point for the Tigers, who held an 18-2 advantage in second half points in the paint. Cal Poly closed the gap to 12 (44-32) with 16:42 to play, but a 12-5 Tiger run over the next five minutes made it 56-37 and the lead would not fall below 13 the rest of the way. Leading 63-50, Pacific used a 9-0 run featuring six straight points from senior Rodrigo De Souza to put it out of reach at 72-50 with 5:09 to go.
Pacific shot an outstanding 63.6% from the field, hitting 28 of 44 shots. The team was almost as good from three-point range, shooting 62.5% (10-16) from the outside. The Tigers had another outstanding assist night, getting 22 assists on 28 field goals.
Pacific is next in action with a road game at Hawai'i on Thursday, Jan. 17 at 9:00 p.m. (Pacific Time).
