Davis, Calif. – The Pacific men's basketball team picked up its first road win of the season with a 74-64 win at UC Davis on Saturday, Jan. 5. With the win, Pacific improved to 7-7 on the season and 1-1 in Big West play. UC Davis dropped to 4-9 overall, 0-2 in league action.
Pacific trailed early in the half 7-4, but recovered with a 9-1 run including five points from junior Sama Taku to take a 13-8 lead with 13:22 to play. The Aggies evened it back up at 15-15 a couple of minutes later, but back to back jumpers by senior Lorenzo McCloud gave the Tigers a 20-16 lead. Pacific pushed the lead to five (23-18), but struggled in the final four plus minutes of the first half. The Tigers missed their last four shots from the field and had three turnovers as UCD took a 24-23 halftime lead.
The second half opened with an 11-1 run by the Tigers, featuring seven points from senior Colin Beatty as they took a 34-25 lead with 17:14 to play. UC Davis came back, cutting Pacific's lead to 42-40 with 10:40 to go. With a two point lead (46-44), Pacific pulled away with an 11-2 run, taking a 57-46 lead with 5:06 to play. The lead would not fall below nine the rest of the way. Down the stretch, Taku and senior Travis Fulton each hit three-pointers at the end of the shot clock to help keep the Aggies at bay.
Taku had 20 points and eight rebounds to lead the Tigers. Fulton added 13 points and junior Ross Rivera scored 12 points. Corey Hawkins scored 19 points to lead UC Davis.
Pacific shot 52.1% from the field, including 62.5% (15-24) in the second half, while the Aggies hit 44.4% of their shots. Pacific had a season-high 10 steals, producing a 16-6 advantage in points off of turnovers.
Pacific is next in action with a home game against UC Santa Barbara on Thursday, Jan. 10 at 7:00 p.m.
