Pacific's Johnston Named Big West Baseball Player of the Week

STOCKTON, Calif. - Pacific junior OF Daniel Johnston (Portola Valley, Calif.) was named the Big West Player of the Week on Monday, May 9 after hitting .583 in the weekend series against UC Davis.
A junior transfer from Canada Junior College, Johnston went 7-for-12 at the plate for the weekend with a pair of doubles, one run batted in and three runs scored. He turned in his first four-hit game on Friday, clubbing two doubles, and posted two hits with a pair of runs scored on Sunday.
On Friday, Johnston doubled in his first two plate appearances, driving in a run in the second inning. He also singled in the seventh and singled and scored in the ninth for his first collegiate four-hit game. He had previously picked up four games this season with three hits.
After adding a single in a one-for-four day Saturday, Johnston went two-for-four in Sunday's series finale, for his ninth multi-hit game this year. In the sixth, Johnston singled and scored to tie the game at 3-3. Johnston singled in the bottom of the eighth inning, stole second base (his 11th of the year), and tagged up on a fly ball to right center to advance to third. He came in to score the winning run of the game on a groundball to short as the Tigers won in their final at bat for the fifth time this season, 5-4.
For the year, Johnston is hitting .279 with 13 doubles, 23 runs batted in and a team-leading four home runs. He ranks third in the Big West in home runs, fifth in doubles (13) and stolen bases (11) and 10th in slugging percentage (.455).
The Tigers continue their run of five games in five days with a home contest against Stanford Monday at 6 p.m. at Klein Family Field.
