STOCKTON, Calif. – The University of the Pacific baseball team dropped its final home and series game against Santa Clara on Sunday afternoon, 9-6.
The Tigers fall to 19-27 overall and 9-15 in the West Coast Conference while the Broncos improve to 22-23 on the season and 8-13 in conference play.
The Orange and Black took a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Kevin Sandri grabbed the first hit of the game with a single through the right side. Alex LeForestier stepped up and cracked a double to left field to put Sandri in scoring position on third. With one out, James Free II hit a deep single to center field to score LeForestier and Sandri for the 2-0 lead.
However, in the top of the fourth, the Broncos took a one-run lead at 3-2. With one on and the game tied 2-2, a single by Tony Boetto scored Evan Haberle for the leading run.
In the bottom half of the inning, Pacific answered back with a single by Sandri up the middle to score Tyler Ryan to tie the game at 3-3.
After two scoreless innings, the Broncos and Tigers squared off for the lead. Santa Clara scored two in the top of the seventh with Jason Dicochea hitting a single up the middle to score Grant Meylan for the 4-3 lead. Jake Brodt then followed suit with a double down the left field line to score Dicochea and push the lead to 5-3.
From there, the Broncos pushed the lead back up to two at the top of the eighth scoring one run on a single by Meylan to score Haberle for the 6-4 lead.
Pacific tied the game back up in the bottom half of the eighth scoring two runs. LeForestier hit a leadoff single and moved to second on a walk by Free. Joey Mejia hit a sacrifice bunt to push the tying runs to second and third, respectively. With one out, Nate Verlin grounded out to score LeForestier to trail 6-5. The next at-bat, Tarantino singled to left field to score Free to tie the game, 6-6.
However, the Broncos pulled out the victory scoring three runs in the top of the ninth to take the 9-6 victory and claim the series, 2-1.
The Tigers tallied 13 hits with six RBI.
Free led the offense with two RBI in one hit and scored one run. Jekich notched four hits in five at-bats with one RBI. Sandri had three hits with one RBI and one run followed by LeForestier and Ryan, who each recorded two hits. LeForestier scored two runs while Ryan had one. Tarantino rounds out the hitters with one.
On the mound, Ryan Shreve was charged with the loss after pitching 1.2 innings with two strikeouts. Freddie Erlandson picked up the win for the Broncos after pitching 1.1 innings and giving up just one hit.
Pacific hits the road for the rest of the season starting at Arizona State University on Sunday, May 13 and Monday, May 14 followed by the final conference series against Brigham Young University on Thursday, May 17 through Saturday, May 19. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday and 6:30 p.m. on Monday.
