STOCKTON, Calif. - Pacific sophomore catcher James Free II was named a Preseason All-American by Perfect Game USA as the 2018 college baseball season approaches.
Free was named a 2017 Freshman All-American Second Team selection by Perfect Game USA, Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball following his breakout campaign.
The switch-hitting catcher raked his way to a .343 batting average while leading the WCC with 14 regular season home runs and 54 runs batted in. He came in at 25th in the NCAA in slugging percentage at .652 and led the Tigers in hits (62) and on base percentage (.471).
Amongst all WCC catchers, Free was top of the charts in home runs, extra base hits (28), total bases (118), slugging percentage, RBI, batting average, and OPS. Free was the WCC freshman leader in batting average, slugging percentage, on base percentage, homers, RBI, doubles and total bases.
In addition to his multiple Freshman All-America honors, following the season Free was named to the All-West Coast Conference Second Team as well as the All-Freshman Team.
The Tigers will open the 2018 season on February 16 with a four-game series at Seattle. Pacific's home opener is set for February 23 with the opener of a four-game set against Utah Valley. The Tigers will play 23 games at Klein Family Field in 2018.
