STOCKTON, Calif. - The Tigers were represented once again on the West Coast Conference's Preseason All-Conference team as Danny Mayer was named to All-WCC team. Mayer led the conference in homers last year with 15 and was second in the conference in slugging percentage at .590.
Mayer, who was drafted by the Minnesota Twins last year but chose to return for his senior season, enters 2017 carrying a 22-game hitting streak and a 34-game on-base streak from 2016. Mayer reached base in every game last season after going 0-for in the conference play opener.
Overall, Mayer hit .314/.346/.590 on the season and .317/.344/.600 in conference play. Mayer also led the Tigers in doubles (16), runs (46), and hits (72) while finishing second on the team in RBI (40). Along with Gio Brusa, Mayer was part of Pacific's first duo to each record 40 RBI since 2009. His 15 homers were also the second-most in a single season by any Tiger in Pacific's history.
Mayer had six games with multiple extra-base hits last year and twice drove in four runs in a game, a career high. The Illinois native had four RBI against Northern Colorado as well as against BYU. Those two games were just a couple of the 12 games in which Mayer drove in multiple runs.
Pacific was also picked eighth in the annual preseason poll of coaches, ahead of Portland and Santa Clara. San Diego was picked to win the conference with five of ten first-place votes, while Gonzaga received three first-place votes and Pepperdine received two.
The entire preseason poll and All-WCC team is available online.
Pacific opens its season on the road with a three-game series against San Diego State, beginning February 17. The first home series for Pacific will be against Cal Poly on February 24.
