Pacific Rally Comes Up Short At Fresno State, 4-3

Fresno, Calif. - Pacific rallied for two in the top of the ninth, but stranded the tying run at second base as Fresno State posted a 4-3 win Tuesday at Beiden Field. Brett Sullivan tallied two hits and drove home two with his ninth-inning single.

The Tigers collected three of their six hits in the game in the ninth inning, loading the bases with one out. After Sullivan's two-run single with two outs cut the Tigers deficit to one, LHP Tyler Linehan stranded the tying run a second base with a game-ending strikeout.

Pacific falls to 7-16 on the year, while Fresno State improves to 7-18.

The Bulldogs used seven pitchers in the contest, with Linehan earning his first save. RHP Blake Quinn tossed a scoreless second inning to pick up the win.

Fresno State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second as Austin Wynns tripled to right center and a P/DH Joran Brink followed with a sacrifice fly.

In the Fresno third, Brody Russell singled and stole second and third. Chris Mariscal singled to right, and Taylor Tempel followed with an infield hit. Aaron Judge brought home Mariscal with a double to center. Trent Garrison capped the scoring with an RBI groundout before DH/RHP Jason Taasaas entered to record the final out of the inning.

Pacific got on the board in the fifth as LF Brett Sullivan singled and took third as Taasaas singled behind the runner on the hit and run. Sullivan came in to score as RF Taylor Murphy grounded into a double play.

Fresno posted zeros until the ninth. Catcher J.P. Yakel ripped a one-out single down the third base line and after CF Tyler Sullivan walks, SS Dustin Torchio singled to right field to load the bases. Linehan coaxed a soft lineup to second base, nearly ending the game, but Torchio beat the shovel pass back to first base.

Brett Sullivan ripped a two-run single to right to plate Yakel and Tyler Sullivan, but Linehan struck out Taasaas to end the ballgame.

LHP Kyle Crawford took the loss, allowing all four Fresno State runs in 2.2 innings of work. He struck out two, while walking none. Taasaas tossed 2.1 innings, allowing just one hit while fanning three. LHP John Haberman threw a perfect sixth inning, as RHP Nick Viola added a scoreless seventh. RHP Kevin Hammann retired all three he faced in the eighth. All told, the Pacific bullpen tossed 5.1 innings of two-hit shutout baseball with just one walk.

The Tigers will open a three-game Big West series against Long Beach State at home on Friday. First pitch from Klein Family Field is at 6 p.m.
